‘Deep work’ will make you better at what you do. You will achieve more in less time. And feel the sense of true fulfillment that comes from the mastery of a skill.

Cal Newport is an Assistant Professor of Computer Science at Georgetown University. In addition to studying the theoretical foundations of our digital age, Newport also writes about the impact of these technologies on the world of work. His most recent book, Deep Work, argues that focus is the new I.Q. in the modern workplace and that the ability to concentrate without distraction is becoming increasingly valuable. He previously wrote So Good They Can’t Ignore You, a book which debunks the long-held belief that “follow your passion” is good advice, and three popular books of unconventional advice for students.

This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at http://ted.com/tedx

Tylertron 21 says:

Deleted all my social media (other than this youtube account) about 5 months ago & I couldn't feel better about it. The ammount of small and large tasks you can do in all the new free time is great. I spend QUALITY TIME with my GF who I plan to marry. It's so great not taking a photo every 60 seconds to post online to get likes. I look at only her, talk to only her, share with only her. It's so perfect and she does the same.

Edgar Vega says:

So true im so annoyed by social media you have no privacy

vincent bryan says:

What if you use social media. The power of social media puts food on some people's table. It is popular for entertainment but social media pays me. I don't pay to use it- it pays me( with my business and posting stuff on YouTube I get checks: I feel tat it's ok to have a balance, but I'm sure this message is not for me it's for people glued to their phones wasting time on it

Daniel Manzano says:

12:33 the lady on bottom right of the screen is on her phone 🙂

royston marples says:

it depends on the goal though

Jay McNally says:

I've always thought that there is something quite pathetic about constantly looking at pictures of people that you really don't associate with.
It's also pathetic to think that you are so self important that people care to see pictures of you and what ever you're doing.

IN REAL LIFE NOBODY CARES ABOUT YOU !!!
YOU ARE NOT SPECIAL !!!
Stop thinking that people care to see pictures of you or even care what you have to say.

Get married, have kids, do something productive with your life and stop wasting all your time with your nose in a fucking phone like a zombified Chinese kid watching Pokémon .

Tanya v says:

I delelted all social media in my phone but i still use it once or twice a week to communicate with friends and family. In that aspect social media are good

Mario Krezo says:

Nothing is ever black or white. I personally hate social media and it took me years to purge myself from facebook, snapchat, etc. However, social media has illuminated many societal issues that were once in the dark to many people.

Shivangi Singh says:

OK. So, I see comments here presenting two different arguments. First, one should quit social media 'cause it's addictive and not good for health. Second, that it's not the fault of social media and it's just a tool.
So, what I feel is every person is different and the number of people who realize that it's just a tool is a handful and more than an average number of people are struggling with lowered self-esteem and anxiety 'cause social medias are made that way that an average person can easily fall into its trap without even realizing. So, I think it's all about the degree of awareness. A person who is well aware of the pros and cons of social media and knows well to harass social media for the sole purpose can use social media. But, if a person is using social media for personal gratification, which in turn is causing a hell lot of anxiety, should take some time off from social media and work on building their self-esteem and learn to stop comparing themselves with others. And once you have learned how to love yourself then BAAMM! you are ready to use social media again. I feel that there is no harm in quitting and spending some time with yourself because you can always come back. SOCIAL MEDIAS AIN'T GOING ANYWHERE. 😉
Also quitting social media altogether ain't a bad idea either because if you don't know how to use the hammer the right way, don't use it and still if you want to use the hammer, learn how to use. 🙂

ali ahmad says:

what I have exprinced with social media is that it is very harmful.

D Vlogs says:

Hendra Prasetya says:

Is shopping online okay is he only against social media or anything involve with the internet?

Dexterity Adroitnes says:

Its ok to have a Social media, nevertheless, use with caution cause make you faking everything

Mandi Lu says:

I consider Pintrest more helpful than not. It's one way I can get design inspiration for various projects. The only thing I wish it had was an organization system similar to folders on my flash drive so I could categorize my pins more meticulously.

Jay Fannin says:

I ended my Facebook account. I started to feel fine not spending time with friends in person because I felt like I got visits out virtually. I thought social media would draw me closer to people but it did the opposite. Besides, posting about ourselves on social media is pure staging at best.

collette caraway says:

Great argument FOR…I agree w/the critical points of view.

deon Blackmail says:

I deleted my social media accounts .now am spending my leisure time with wonderful activities

SuperSocco says:

Try life with no computer! super happy!

Nathan Bickel says:

That ending though xD

Oliver Koh says:

Awesome!
I am better off with the less frequent use of social media, simply because I can concentrate better during my work and study, and save myself from exposure to much-fragmented information, or more of meaningless, superficial contents — which I call noises in life.

Csoery says:

I agree with a lot of things he mentions (and he didn't even bring up privacy issues!), but I happen to be a TED Translator, bringing talks like this to a non-English speaking audience. My work would be significantly harder if I wasn't able to communicate with my colleagues in our Facebook group. There are many things to coordinate and discuss, you can't manage remote collaboration via email alone. Or you have to use your own platform, which means a different system for every group/project… I actually deleted my FB account once, and came back only to be able to collaborate with TEDsters. Yes, I use my "private" (lol) page as well, texting friends and posting on my wall sometimes. I agree this is completely unhealthy, dangerous from both the privacy and the psychological angle, and only gives one the illusion of contact. I'm glad I found this video (which I wouldn't have seen if it wasn't for YT), it's a good reminder to cut down on the not necessary use of social media.

Jeff Bourke says:

im quitting youtube right now!

Harley Matair says:

Frankly speaking social media is not make us more social, its the way to show what we want to show from us. the world now change nowadays people has social media account, barely more to share what we are doing , and who were you at sosial media, but then in reallity people can see what is the true!! Yes its only entertainment which we are spend the most time, but then all is in our hand and our decision how many hours how many time we want to see our sosial media , become addictive? thats the problem. I am agree all the point that we are not driven by social media but we can use it to impact people by our posting…

now people moslty share something uniq, fun, impressive, inpire short video , now this is the time when people use this social media for entertaiment, but again thats not our social life. I am consern about this, so social media is only entertaiment, people can be connecting with other, that only the tools, the main things is our social life and our target in life, the vision! what we going to do in life, daily target, monthly target, and the main things we are not live in internet/phone/social media, we live in neighborhood called earth!!

Greetings from West Papua!!
